Wassily Instructions

Tools:

You will need two different size Allen wrenches:

1.     ------  For the set screws in the chair base.

2.     ------   All the rest.

As a rule, you should mark each component with a piece of masking tape so that after you remove it, you know where it belongs when reassembling.

Steps:

1. Refer to Fig. 1 for location of side-rail. Using an allen wrench, remove the side-rail. There are three fasteners that hold the side rail in place.  Repeat for other side.

2. Remove seat. Refer to Fig. 2 for location of fasteners.

3.    Separate chair frame at the base-seam, where the two halves come together. This will require turning the set screws inward (clockwise), instead of outward.  (In some cases, the fasteners are flat head screws.  If its flat head screws you are dealing with, then remove them in the normal method of removing any screw.)  Please note, you only need loosen the set screws on one half of the chair frame. Refer to Fig. 3 for location of fasteners. To separate the two halves may require another set of hands, or a rubber mallet, particularly if the chair has been exposed to a moist environment.

4.     Once the two halves have been separated at the bottom you are now able to remove the 4 arm straps. Slide the outer-most arm strap at the front of the chair down the chair frame (toward the outside), around the corner, and off of the frame. See Fig. 4.

5.     Thread the loose end of the arm strap back through the gap between the upper and lower back-rest straps (see Fig. 5), and slide the rear section of the arm strap off of the other half of the frame.

6.     Repeat this process for the inner arm strap (see Fig. 6).

7.     Repeat this process for the remaining arm straps, in the above order.

8.     Removal of all arms straps will allow you to separate the backrest assembly (if necessary), and the two halves of the chair frame.

Reassembly is the opposite of the above, and will probably take another set of hands when re-installing the side-rails. It’s difficult to put enough tension on the straps and thread the fasteners at the same time so a second pair of hands will help.

Tip: It is difficult for the leather to turn the corners of the metal frame. To help, apply a light lubricant to the metal at the turns. This will reduce friction, making it easier to turn the corners.

As for removing the backrest straps from their frame, that can be difficult. If the leather is old, there is risk of ripping the leather. The straps are quite wide, and need to make a 90 degree turn across the width of the strap to be removed.   If you wish, send us the backrest assembly with the straps still mounted and we can remove them for you.
