How Do I Know the Straps You Make Will Fit My Chair?

Wassily frames come in various sizes.  There is no architectural drawing that is considered original, so liberties are take by manufactures that change the dimensions of the chair.  Even from the same factory, there are slight engineering changes over time. To address this issue, each strap is custom manufactured for your specific chair. Here’s how that works:

 We know it will fit because we require two things from you:

1.     We need the original component(s) that you want us to replicate.  For a full set of straps, we need one arm, one back and the seat.  For individual components we just need that component. If there are multiple chairs involved and they are identical (purchased at the same time) then we only need one set. This tells us three important variables that are specific to your chair.  1. The stitching pattern, 2. The color, 3. The dimension.  You don’t need to take the chair apart.  Simply cut the strap off at the loops with a razor knife or the like.  It is a lot harder to remove old straps than installing new ones as the old straps have dried out, shrunk and stiffened making it difficult to turn the metal frame corners. Over time the leather may sag or stretch a bit.  We address this in the next step.

2.     We ask that you take careful measurements of the frame at specific places to confirm the correct dimensions.  There is a form we supply as a PDF showing exactly where and how to take these critical measurements.

This combination of you sending us your strap(s) and completing the measurement task allows us to build your custom strap precisely to the dimension of your frame every time.

 We start with raw leather (premium vegetable tanned leather, 7/8 oz), the same grade and thickness of leather used on Knoll’s Wassily chairs.  By starting with this quality raw leather allows us to customize the strap with all three variables --- Color, Stitching pattern and thread color, Dimension.

This allows you to change the color to whatever color you want as we are experts at color matching.
